TECHNOLOGICAL SPIRIT OF THE TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY: PHILOSOPHICAL FOUNDATIONS OF DIGITAL SUBJECTIVITY AND CULTURAL EVOLUTION
ABSTRACT
This article offers a conceptual reconstruction of the “technological spirit” of the twenty-first century as a philosophical framework for understanding digital subjectivity and ongoing cultural transformation. Rather than interpreting technology as a neutral instrument, the study approaches it as an ontological milieu that reshapes modes of self-awareness, communication, and value formation. Engaging critically with classical transcendental philosophy and contemporary theories of the information society, the paper argues that digital subjectivity emerges as a hybrid configuration formed through the interaction between human consciousness and algorithmic infrastructures. The research combines hermeneutic interpretation, comparative analysis and interdisciplinary synthesis. It demonstrates that digitalization redefines epistemological structures, symbolic production and ethical responsibility. The technological spirit is conceptualized as a cultural paradigm that determines the trajectory of civilizational evolution in the networked age.
АННОТАЦИЯ
В статье представлена философская реконструкция «технологического духа» XXI века как концептуальной рамки анализа цифровой субъективности и культурной трансформации. Технология рассматривается не как нейтральный инструмент, а как онтологическая среда, формирующая новые способы самосознания, коммуникации и ценностной ориентации. В диалоге с трансцендентальной философией и современными теориями информационного общества обосновывается тезис о цифровой субъективности как гибридной конфигурации, возникающей во взаимодействии человеческого сознания и алгоритмических инфраструктур. Методология включает герменевтический, сравнительный и междисциплинарный подходы. Показано, что цифровизация трансформирует эпистемологические структуры, символическое производство и этическую ответственность. Технологический дух интерпретируется как культурная парадигма, определяющая направление цивилизационной эволюции в сетевую эпоху.

Introduction
The twenty-first century is characterized by the rapid expansion of digital infrastructures that permeate social, political, economic and cultural life. Network platforms, artificial intelligence systems and algorithmic governance have transformed not only external institutional arrangements but also internal structures of human self-understanding.
The concept of the “technological spirit” can be interpreted as a philosophical metaphor designating the historical atmosphere in which technology ceases to function merely as a tool and becomes a constitutive dimension of reality. Classical philosophy already anticipated the active role of subjectivity in structuring experience. In the critical philosophy of Immanuel Kant, the subject synthesizes empirical data through transcendental categories [5]. In contemporary digital environments, however, this synthesizing activity increasingly interacts with algorithmic systems that participate in organizing perception and knowledge.
Similarly, Martin Heidegger argued that modern technology reveals a specific mode of being rather than serving as a neutral instrument [4]. In the digital age, this revealing assumes informational and computational forms.
Relevance of the research
The relevance of this research is driven by structural transformations in the cultural and cognitive dynamics of contemporary society. First, the emergence of what Manuel Castells defined as the network society has altered the architecture of power and identity [2]. Second, the development of information ethics and digital ontology in the works of Luciano Floridi has introduced new categories for interpreting informational environments [3]. Third, digitalization directly influences education, art and communicative rationality.
These transformations demand philosophical analysis capable of integrating technological, anthropological and cultural dimensions into a coherent framework.
Aim of the research
The purpose of this article is to develop a philosophical interpretation of digital subjectivity as a manifestation of the technological spirit of the twenty-first century and to determine its role in shaping contemporary cultural evolution.
Methodology
The methodological foundation of the research includes:
- Hermeneutic interpretation of classical and contemporary philosophical texts;
- Comparative analysis of transcendental philosophy and digital ontology;
- Interdisciplinary synthesis integrating philosophy of technology, media theory and cultural studies;
- Conceptual modeling aimed at reconstructing the structure of digital subjectivity.
Such an approach allows us to move beyond descriptive accounts of technological change and articulate its ontological implications.
The technological spirit as an ontological paradigm
The technological spirit signifies a historical configuration in which technological mediation determines the conditions of experience. Unlike industrial modernity, where machines extended physical capabilities, digital technologies extend cognitive and communicative functions [7].
Heidegger emphasized that modern technology enframes reality as standing-reserve [4]. In digital culture, this enframing affects human identity itself: personal data, algorithmic profiling and predictive analytics become structural elements of subject formation.
Floridi describes the contemporary condition as life within the “infosphere,” a unified informational environment where the distinction between online and offline becomes increasingly irrelevant [3]. The human being thus appears as an informational agent embedded within complex digital ecosystems.
Digital subjectivity: structure and transformation
- Digital subjectivity may be defined as a historically specific form of selfhood constituted through technological mediation. It is characterized by several features:
- Algorithmically structured visibility (identity constructed through platforms);
- Datafication of personal and social practices;
- Distributed cognition, where thinking is partially externalized to computational systems;
- Fluid identity models shaped by network interactions.
In Kantian terms, the unity of apperception ensures coherence of experience [5]. In digital environments, however, synthetic processes are supplemented by algorithmic filtering and automated categorization.
Castells notes that identity in the network society becomes project-oriented and constantly reconstructed [2]. Cultural evolution therefore unfolds through dynamic informational flows rather than stable institutional hierarchies.
Cultural evolution in the digital context
Cultural evolution in the twenty-first century cannot be reduced to technological progress alone. It involves transformations in symbolic production, authorship and collective memory. Digital art, virtual environments and AI-generated texts challenge traditional distinctions between creator and instrument [1].
Marshall McLuhan anticipated that media function as extensions of human faculties [6]. In contemporary conditions, such extensions reshape perception itself. The technological spirit thus operates as a cultural matrix within which meaning is generated, circulated and archived.
Discussion
The philosophical interpretation of the technological spirit raises normative questions. Does algorithmic mediation enhance autonomy or subtly constrain it? Can ethical responsibility be preserved within automated systems?
Floridi proposes an ethics of information grounded in responsibility toward the infosphere [3]. At the same time, Heidegger warns of the risk that technological enframing may obscure alternative modes of revealing [4].
A balanced perspective requires integrating technological innovation with humanistic principles such as rational autonomy, dignity and critical reflection. Cultural evolution depends on maintaining this equilibrium.
Conclusion
The technological spirit of the twenty-first century represents a paradigmatic shift in the structure of subjectivity and culture. Digital subjectivity emerges as a hybrid formation combining transcendental structures of consciousness with algorithmic mediation.
Technology is no longer an external instrument but an ontological condition shaping cognition, communication and creativity. The trajectory of cultural evolution will depend on the capacity of societies to harmonize technological advancement with ethical responsibility and philosophical reflection.
