Idea of national-cultural identity in John Fowles’s works of the 1960s

АННОТАЦИЯ

Настоящая статья рассматривает особенности интерпретации концептов «английскость» и «британскость» в эссе «Быть англичанином, а не британцем» и первой редакции романа «Волхв», написанных британским писателем Джоном Фаулзом в 1964—1965 годах. Проводятся параллели между основными мыслями, сформулированными автором в эссе, и их художественным осмыслением в романе.

ABSTRACT

The article studies the interpretation of concepts ‘Englishness’ and ‘Britishness’ in John Fowles’s essay ‘On Being English, not British’ and the first variant of his novel ‘The Magus’ written between 1964 and 1965. The major ideas expressed in the essay are compared to their manifestation in the plot and characters of the novel.
